Highland Council has set out a long-term plan for sustainable weed management that will reduce reliance on chemical herbicides, maintain safe public spaces and protect biodiversity.

The new Integrated Weed Control Strategy and Action Plan builds on the Council’s partial ban on glyphosate-based products in playgrounds, schools and sports facilities, which was introduced in 2019.

The Council’s long-term vision includes allowing natural vegetation to flourish where appropriate, greater control of invasive non-native species and increased community engagement. Any continued use of herbicides will remain strictly regulated and compliant with UK and EU safety standards.

Strict monitoring will ensure minimal, controlled and responsible application, particularly where it is necessary to manage safety risks, invasive species or difficult-to-control vegetation.

Disruption to road uses and pedestrians, due to improvement works on the Raigmore interchange, are to continue into the summer.

Progress has been made across a range of upgrades; however, the overall programme has been extended due to ongoing emergency gas mains replacement works.

It is anticipated that the installation of the new traffic signals will continue throughout July with completion expected by August.

Traffic management arrangements for the signalization of the roundabout and A9 approaches will remain unchanged.

Overnight lane closures between 7pm and 6am will continue as required.

Summer holiday travel is expected to be severely disrupted after workers at Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen airports voted for strike action in a pay dispute.

The personnel involved include public facing security staff, airport ambassadors and engineers alongside ground crew.

Unite will announce strike dates in the coming days, with industrial action expected to occur during the peak of the summer holiday rush, coinciding with the World Cup, and the Commonwealth Games being held in Glasgow.
