As the summer season approaches, numerous Wester Ross businesses are looking to employ new staff in various positions.

Among the potential employers are Ullapool Museum for administration and front of house assistance, Isle View Care Home in Aultbea for cooking, cleaning and health care, Inverewe Garden for visitor services, the GALE Centre in Gairloch for general assistance and kitchen services, and many hospitality businesses including the Caledonian Hotel and the Ceilidh Place in Ullapool looking for bar staff, kitchen or admin help. A number of holiday home businesses are also looking for changeover assistance.

Many of the available posts are seasonal but a number of permanent year round positions are available.

Two Ross-shire dementia projects are among five in the Highlands benefiting from grants through the third year of Age Scotland’s Encouraging and Supporting Grassroots Activity Fund.

A total of just under £350,000 has been distributed throughout Scotland with the grants enabled by the Scottish Government. The fund aims to address gaps in support for people living with dementia and unpaid carers, break down barriers to support, and empower people to live well within their communities.

The Ross-shire projects benefiting are Evanton Wood Company and Gairloch Museum’s Whatever the Weather Wednesday programme. Sarah Wright from the Museum said that the programme offers a supported and inclusive opportunity for people to come together to enjoy reminiscing, a social lunch and traditional board games and that the organisers are grateful to Age Scotland for granting the funding to continue the work.

Inspectors and Education Scotland have praised a Wester Ross primary school and nursery class following a recent inspection.

Inspectors praised improvement in pupil attainment while Education Scotland praised the confident and polite children along with the rise in the number of Gaelic speakers.

Some areas for improvement were also identified including the need to develop consistently high quality approaches to learning, teaching and assessment but inspectors commented that the school has the capacity to continue to improve so no more visits are planned in connection with the recent inspection.
