Local Headlines - 03 October 2026

Action to address health and transport challenges across the Highlands and Islands has been strengthened through the development of a new Health and Transport Action Plan for the region. The project, including the appointment of a dedicated Health and Transport Officer, is being funded by the Scottish Government through grant funding awarded to the regional transport partnership HITRANS.

The new officer will work with partners across the health and transport sectors to coordinate efforts to address shared challenges and priorities in rural and island areas. He will also help identify opportunities for investment and innovation that improve the planning, integration and delivery of health and transport services. An early priority will be working with NHS boards and others to better understand the travel needs of patients, carers and staff who rely on air and ferry services for essential healthcare.

Entries are now open for next year’s Bealach Na Ba Cycle Sportive which will take place on Saturday 15th May. Once again, 500 riders are expected to take part with over 140 already entered. This year’s event raised £15,000 for the local community and a further £6,000 for Prostate Cancer UK. Run by Shieldaig Community Association, full details are available at sientries.co.uk.

Local amateur football team, Gairloch & Aultbea United plays in the Clan Donald Cup Final against Portree this afternoon. It will be preceded by a minute’s silence in memory of Peggy King, a long time supporter of GA United and young person’s football. A spokesperson for United has said that without her support it is unlikely there would be any youth football in the area.

Professionally, Ross County currently leading League One on goal difference from Hamilton Academical, has a home game in League One against Alloa Athletic with the kick off at three o’clock this afternoon.
