The Met Office has issued another yellow warning of snow and ice likely to bring further disruption across the whole of the north of Scotland. The warning is in force until midnight tonight with strong winds possibly leading to continued drifting snow in places.
Accumulations of snow over lower ground are expected to be lower but ice is expected to remain a hazard in the morning and tonight, particularly where snow melts and refreezes overnight.
FilmG, Scotland’s Gaelic short-film competition, is currently touring high schools in the Highlands with practical, industry-led workshops designed to help young filmmakers turn ideas into finished films in time for the entry deadline for this year’s competition on 28th February.
Twelve workshops were completed before Christmas, including one in Gairloch High School, with more scheduled for January and February including at schools in the Western Isles. The workshops introduce pupils to story development, filming and editing, all while working in Gaelic. With no set theme this year for FilmG, participants have been given the freedom to explore any subject that inspires them, supported by tutors through every stage of the process.
Work has begun this week at Inverness Crematorium to upgrade the current cremators to meet forthcoming government emission standards and to improve the overall quality of service facilities.
The works will include the refurbishment of the small chapel to better accommodate direct cremations and smaller services, as well as upgrades in the main chapel, featuring a new catafalque and refurbished committal area. A new extension will also be built to house the new cremators and abatement systems.
These improvements will introduce advanced cremation technology and enhanced chapel spaces, all while ensuring continuity of service through a carefully phased construction programme. The project is expected to be completed by late 2026, restoring full operational capacity and ensuring compliance with new environmental regulations. During the refurbishment, there will be an impact on service delivery and Funeral Directors have been informed of the temporary arrangements.
