The Highland Council Corporate Management Team (CMT) is calling for a whole-authority approach to an Area of Linguistic Significance (ALS) designation.

Under the Scottish Languages Act 2025, an area may be designated as an ALS if it has

    • a significant number of people with Gaelic language skills
    • or a historical connection with the use of Gaelic
    • or significant activity relating to Gaelic language or culture.

2022 Census data shows that eight percent of Highland’s population has some Gaelic language skills.

The CMT report will be presented to the full Council next week.

Today is the second day of the International Transplant Football Tournament at Ross County’s Global Energy Stadium in Dingwall.

Scotland face England at 11am, followed by Northern Ireland against Wales at midday.

The third-place play-off starts at 3pm, before the grand final kicks off at 4pm.

Entry is by donation, with tickets valid across both days.

The event is the first international transplant football tournament to be held in Scotland.

It is being viewed as valuable preparation ahead of the Transplant Football World Cup in Germany this September - when 15 countries are expected to take part, including the current World Champions, Chile.

A year on from Scotland’s ban on the sale of single-use vapes, environmental and health campaigners are calling for further action to protect people and the environment.

Groups involved say there has been a drop in discarded vapes across Scotland and the wider UK since the ban came into force.

However, concerns remain over youth vaping, with limited data available on whether the legislation has reduced uptake among young people.

Campaigners also warn that problems linked to vape disposal, recycling and smoking-related litter continue, and are urging governments to take stronger action to tackle the health and environmental impact.
