Local Headlines - 26 March 2025

BEAR Scotland have warned of potential delays on the A9 at Drumochter for the next three weeks.

Surfacing and road marking improvements on the southbound dual carriageway will begin tomorrow, Thursday March 27th, at 7pm and be completed by 6am on Saturday April 19th.

The works will involve 24-hour single lane closure, and overnight convoy between 7pm and 6am

On Friday 18th April the road will be fully open during the day, switching to a single lane closure with convoy from 7pm until 6am on Saturday 19th April.

Motorists are advised to check the Traffic Scotland website for real-time travel updates.

Judith Fish, owner of the Applecross Inn, has expressed anxiety about the area becoming overwhelmed with tourists.

While not against village being included on the popular NC500 route, traffic has become a real issue, with the condition of the Bealach of particular concern.

Judith said that the state of the road needs to be addressed urgently, if it is not to suffer long closure for repairs …... and added that the current use of heavy plant to lay hydro cables is not helping.

A one-way system into the village along the coast road and out over the Bealach - which would avoid the terrifying head-to-heads - would be a solution.

Highland Councillors will be asked to consider a new approach to the future of the Highland Investment Plan (HIP) at a meeting of the full council tomorrow.

Included in the recommendations to Council will be that Hub North Scotland Ltd be taken forward as the chosen HIP delivery partner; and that a Commissioning Approval Board be set up and chaired by the Assistant Chief Executive – Place.

The Committee will also be asked to agree the allocation of capital funding to the first group of Phase 1 projects and the proposed project delivery timescales.
