Local Headlines - 21 February 2025

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning covering the whole of Scotland but with particular reference to exposed coastal areas and areas of high ground inland. The warning will be in place from 6am until 6pm on Sunday with southerly to southwesterly winds increasing through Sunday morning with gusts of 50 to 60 mph and possibly as much as 70 mph with rain accompanying the wind which will ease through the afternoon and early evening.

A new energy efficient lighting system costing £4 million pounds has been installed at Inverness Airport to provide crucial visual guidance to pilots during periods of low visibility and darkness.

The new system is said to cut energy consumption by 80 per cent and is part of a wider programme by Highlands and Islands Airports Limited to invest in sustainable technologies that secure the long-term safety, efficiency, and environmental responsibility of its airport network.

Additional dates have been announced for public consultation on the proposed visitor levy also known as the tourist tax with a community drop-in event scheduled to happen in Ullapool Community Library next Thursday 27 February from 11 till 1 o’clock.

This will be an informal event giving members of the public the opportunity to talk to Council staff about the scheme and to ask questions about it. Public access computers will also be available to enable the online consultation document to be completed.

Other sessions are scheduled for Kyle of Lochalsh, Fort William, Brora, Portree and Kinlochbervie along with business related sessions publicised by Chambers of Commerce.

In the SPFL Premiership tomorrow, Ross County has a home game against Dundee which is currently two points below County in second bottom place in the league, so a defeat for County would see the teams swap places, whereas a win could see County move into the top six, depending on the results of other matches.

In League One, Inverness Caley Thistle has an away game against Kelty Hearts. Caley Thistle remains in second bottom place in the table five points behind Annan Athletic albeit with a game in hand, so will be hoping not to lose any more ground.

Both matches kick off at three o’clock tomorrow afternoon.
