It being reported that a large number of fish deaths have taken place in Torridon. The Ferret publication is alleging that more than 135,000 fish have died at Mowi Scotland’s salmon farm at Torridon since September 2023. The deaths are attributed to environmental issues, natural causes, disease and treatments to remove lice from salmon.
A complaint has been made to the Crown Office alleging that some fish were subjected to inappropriate, unnecessary, and often fatal treatments at the farm. In response, Mowi is reported to have said it has a very strict health and welfare policy and meets all the standards set out to ensure the welfare of cleaner fish. The firm added it was not aware of any complaint.
North West Highland Beach Cleans has published its group results for May. 32 beach cleans were carried out by 33 volunteers, picking up 519kg of litter.
Totals for 2025 so far are 263 beach cleans by 389 volunteers recovering 5490kg of litter. Overall, since it started recording in December 2023, Noth West Beach Cleans has removed over 18.1 tonnes of rubbish from local beaches. Once again, organisers congratulated and thanked all those involved.
Figures released by Transport Scotland reveal that the number of road accidents caused by visitors to Scotland driving on the wrong side of the road has increased by 46% in a year. Thirty five collisions caused by "inexperience of driving on the left" were reported in 2023, up from 24 the previous year.
Campaigners have called for additional signage and prompts to be put in place as a reminder for tourists, particularly in rural areas, while Road Safety Scotland said there was no clear reason for the increased frequency of crashes.
Additional works to strengthen the structure of the Kessock Bridge have been added to the current safety improvements being carried out, with completion of the programme now expected to be in Autumn next year.
The west footway and cycle path, currently closed, will reopen in December this year when the closure will be transferred to the east side of the bridge. Intermittent night time closures are also expected with a reduction in the speed limit to 30mph over short periods from time to time. Road users are asked to plan ahead by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date information and to leave extra time to complete journeys.
