Local Headlines - 15 April 2025

The much anticipated Co-op opposite the ‘Wildcat’ (Morrisons Daily) in Gairloch is scheduled to open before the end of the year.

Ground works have already begun, and the completed store will have a sales area of approximately three hundred and twenty-five square metres with the potential to create about 15 new jobs.
The plans also include a twenty-six-bay car park, including 4 EV charging points and dedicated bays for motorhomes.

Opponents of the store expressed concerns that it would have a negative impact on local businesses, however the Co-op maintain they will broaden, rather than diminish the range of local amenities.

Co-op is one of the world’s largest consumer-owned co-operatives, and dates back to 1863.

The National Theatre of Scotland is touring a new show which explores Scottish culture, myths, history and identity.

Performed in Scots, with Gaelic songs, the show has its roots in the 18th century poems of James MacPherson, which tell tartan trimmed tales of Scottish bard Ossian.

The poems found critical and economic acclaim, but questions over Ossian’s authenticity plagued the writer and the impact and legacy of the work.

In ‘Through the shortbread tin’  21st century poet Martin O’Connor revisits Macpherson’s epic and begins to questions whether the  ‘gift-shop’ images of Scotland hold us back or bring us forward.

The tour ends in May.

…. and in football news ….

The post-split fixtures for the SPFL Premiership have been announced with Ross County having just two of its last five matches at home.

The games begin on Saturday 26th April when County travels to Kilmarnock.

County will play at home against Hearts and Motherwell, and away against Kilmarnock, St Johnstone and Dundee.

Apart from St Johnstone, which is at the foot of the table five points behind second bottom club Dundee, the other five teams are all within six points of each other, so the final positions are for all to play for.
