Road Policing Officers have been carrying out road safety patrols recently across the Highlands and have made a series of arrests.

Last weekend patrols on the A82 near Loch Ba stopped two motorists driving at 103 mph and 114 mph while patrols on the A835 near Garve on Sunday observed a group of performance vehicles travelling in convoy in excess of 100 mph. Five male drivers have been reported to the Procurator Fiscal for dangerous driving.

Later in the day a motorcyclist was recorded at 129 mph and he too has been reported for dangerous driving. A police spokesperson said that speeding, dangerous driving and drink driving are three of the five most common causes in road traffic fatalities and anyone treating the roads like a racetrack will be dealt with robustly.

The popular Earthmind Geotour organised by the North West Highland Geopark, is returning to Wester Ross next month, this time taking place taking place over 3 days in early May.

Led by authors and geologists Ruth Allen and John McLellan, the unique 3 day tour will take participants on a sensory and creative journey around sights of geological interest and will include a connection with the landscape amongst some of the oldest rocks in Europe. It will also include a book event at Ullapool Bookshop on Wed 6th May at 6pm. Full details of the Geotour are available on the NWH Geopark website.

A memorial service was held recently at Inchnadamph Church to mark the 85th anniversary of the aircraft Avro Anson N9857 which crashed into Ben More Assynt in April 1941 with the loss of six lives.

The plane had been on a training flight from RAF Kinloss. Due to the remoteness of the area, the crash site was not discovered until about six weeks after the accident had happened. The site is the highest war grave in the United Kingdom and the only one where those who died were buried on location. It is now marked by a granite memorial.

Over 100 people attended the memorial service with representation from the RAF, Royal British Legion, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and Assynt Mountain Rescue Team among others.
