Gairloch High School has come out as the best performing school in Highland Council’s area based on national data relating to the percentage of pupils leaving with five or more Higher qualifications or equivalent and is rated eighteenth out of over 350 state secondary schools in Scotland.
The measurement of percentage used is often considered a benchmark of academic achievement because it’s a common entry requirement for university. Head teacher, Stuart Caddell, said he is very very proud but the table is based on just one measure of performance and everyone should be mindful that there is more to school than the achievement of five or more Highers.
The first new permanent lifeboat for the Portree RNLI station in 30 years has arrived and will take over from the current Trent class boat later this year. The new boat named Peter and Mary which is powered by water jets rather than conventional propellors, arrived in Portree on Saturday after its five day delivery voyage from Poole in Dorset.
It is a Shannon class vessel, the smallest and lightest all weather lifeboat designed and built entirely by the RNLI. It has a uniquely designed hull to improve handling and efficiency at sea even in rough weather and includes self righting capabilities. The outgoing lifeboat, Stanley Watson Barke, will remain in service while additional crew training takes place before the new vessel enters service in several weeks’ time.
The Highlands and Islands Climate Hub is launching a new initiative for young people aged 16 to 30 who are passionate about climate action. To be called the Highlands and Islands Climate Collective, it will highlight ways that young people can act against the climate emergency, connect with community groups and organisations, and help build skills to enter sustainable careers.
A launch event will take place online on 29th April which will explore why it’s important for young people to get involved in climate action. It will enable young people to hear firsthand experiences of how opportunities have shaped personal and career development and will include how community groups can connect with young people.
The Highlands & Islands Climate Hub is one of 24 climate action hubs across Scotland funded by the Scottish Government with the purpose of supporting community-led climate action across the region.
