Following a fatal accident on the A9 at Slochd on Monday when 2 people were killed, safety campaigners, including Fergus Ewing, Independent MSP for Inverness and Nairn, have called for immediate safety improvements to be undertaken.

The group proposes that a double white line to prohibit overtaking should be put down between the Slochd dual carriageway and the south Slochd Beag Bridge. Fergus Ewing is also seeking a faster timetable for completion of what he refers to as the long promised dualling of the road.

The road was closed for over 7 hours after the accident and once again, police have called for anyone with information or dash cam footage who has not spoken to them to contact them as soon as possible.

The Highland Council has confirmed that the annual Hogmanay concert in Inverness, the Red Hot Highland Fling, has been cancelled and will not take place in future.

The event which was held at the Northern Meeting Park and was attended latterly by around 5,000 people, was run by the Inverness Events and Festival Working Group and financed by the city’s common good fund.

Ticketing requirements and the risk of cancellation due to extreme weather which happened last year, have made the event no longer viable. Various hospitality businesses tried to come up with an alternative event but no proposals were put forward and the decision has been taken that there is no longer any justification to invest funds from the common good fund into a Hogmanay event.

The finalists shortlisted across 10 categories for the Nature of Scotland Awards 2025 promoted by the RSPB, a charity for the conservation of birds and nature, and supported by various sponsors including NatureScot, have been announced and Include Ullapool Sea Savers in the Youth Action Award category.

This award honours groups of young people up to 25 years old who are making a difference to Scotland’s wildlife and habitats. The Ullapool Sea Savers are a youth environmental activism group who campaign on issues such as coffee pod recycling, accessible boat trips, and keeping the sea clean. They are said to absolutely delighted to be shortlisted for the Award, the winner of which will be announced at a ceremony in Edinburgh on 20th November.
