Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team was called out on Sunday afternoon to help a group of four walkers with their five dogs who had got into difficulty on Fionn Bheinn near Achnasheen.
The five dogs had fallen through a cornice below the summit of the hill. Two of the walkers succeeded in recovering four dogs but a fifth dog remained missing and the walkers descended the hill and were met, uninjured, by members of the MRT. The missing spaniel, was not found
On Monday the missing dog’s owner went back to the location with three team members and with the help of a local estate stalker, they were able to trace the dog which had spent the night high on the mountain in snowy conditions. An MRT member was able to bring the dog safely back.
The MRT leader Iain Nesbitt said that the incident illustrates just how hazardous snow cornices can be. Often difficult to see, they are overhanging ledges of snow formed by strong winds on the edges of ridges and cores and can easily be fallen through.
