Culloden Battlefield by Inverness has announced that a 280 year old mortar shell was discovered during an archaeology week at the site.
The 5.5 inch mortal shell was discovered during a dig last year and this is the first piece of government ordnance that has ever been found on the Battlefield. The mortar shell was entirely intact, was still packed with gunpowder and it was discovered 30 centimeters deep into the ground. The mortar shell has since been cleaned and assessed, making it safe to be handled and it has now gone on display at the Battlefield.
