The Bac Dubh rewilding project has been awarded over seven thousand pounds from the Highlands and Islands Environment Foundation.

The ninety-two acre site, below Cliff Hill near Poolewe, contains twenty acres of peatland which has been historically cut for fuel. This has resulted in the landscape eroding, drying out and releasing carbon.

The project will attempt to restore the peatland by creating a series of leaky dams in a burn which crosses the area. These will hold back water, enhancing the biodiversity of the burn and surrounding peatland.

The Gairloch community was lauded by Maree Todd when she visited Strathburn House last week.

The MSP for Caithness, Sutherland and Ross was accompanied by Councillor Liz Kraft as she toured the recently reopened facility.

Acknowledging the distress which followed the abrupt closure of the care home last summer, Ms Todd said that the reopening was ultimately a testament to the determination, compassion, and perseverance of the people of Gairloch.

She also noted that the impact of Brexit and new visa restrictions had made it nearly impossible to recruit international workers, thus placing huge strain on the sector, especially in rural areas like the Highlands.

The Highland Archive Service has achieved reaccreditation from the National Records of Scotland and the Scottish Council on Archives.

The panel was particularly impressed by the progress the Highland service had made around digital preservation - making records more accessible to a wider audience and preserving them for the long-term future.

The service was established in 1990 and has premises in Inverness, Portree and Fort William, together with the Nuclear and Caithness Archives at Wick Airport.

It is dedicated to maintaining records that reflect the history and diversity of the Scottish Highlands and its residents.  The archives are open to anyone and can be accessed either in person or through digital channels.
