The Royal Society of Edinburgh is hosting a public panel discussion in Ullapool Village Hall tomorrow evening.

The conversation will focus on misinformation and its impact on democracy and is part of the Society's Scottish Election Programme, which aims to spark debate on the key issues shaping Scotland’s future, ahead of the Holyrood election in May 2026.

This session will explore how information is created, shared, and weaponized in the context of a pivotal election.

It will also consider how voters can better recognize bias, resist manipulation, and play an active role in shaping a fairer, more resilient democracy.

Chaired by Professor Martin Hendry, the open event runs from 5.30 pm until 7 pm.

Steps towards introducing a Short Term Let Control Area (STLCA) have been considered by Highland Council’s Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh area committee.

At their meeting on Monday the committee agreed to progress with the process of considering the introduction of an STLCA covering all or part of the area.

This will enable communities within the area to participate in consultation at an appropriate stage.

The committee felt this was worthy of consideration at this stage, as indicators show that housing withing the ward is less affordable and has almost twice the rate of short-term lets and second homes as Highland as a whole.

The value of Gaelic in shaping future careers was celebrated at an event held at UHI North, West and Hebrides Stornoway campus, last week.

Around 40 people, including pupils from local schools, attended the conference where staff highlighted the wide range of career opportunities available to Gaelic graduates — from education and media to culture, community development and beyond.

UHI offers Gaelic degrees in a number of flexible formats, including part-time and online, making them suitable for those in employment who are seeking to upskill, or change career direction.
