Amended plans for a spaceport on the Moine peninsula in Sutherland have been approved. The new plans involve changes to the layout of the spaceport site and include the relocation of the antenna park to the top of Ben Tongue. Planning permission for the project was previously granted some three years ago and some construction work has already started.
The amended plans also include a smaller launch pad and service facilities along with realignment of an access road to avoid an area of deep peat. In granting permission, a planning officer said there is already telecommunications infrastructure on the top of Ben Tongue and it is not considered that the development would significantly alter the character of the area. It is proposed that the spaceport be used for the launch of small satellites including those for monitoring climate change.
