Highland Council is celebrating the annual Scottish Apprenticeship Week for 2026…

There are currently 555 pupils progressing through Foundation apprenticeships and 143 pupils undertaking Modern Apprenticeships throughout the region. As part of their Annual week to highlight this significant contribution to pupil’s Education, Highland Council has said that these opportunities give people a chance to earn, learn and build confidence, whilst also developing valuable skills for the future. One example of new apprenticeships is at The Inverness Castle Experience which has opened its doors to the next generation of Highland talent this February, welcoming secondary school pupils from across the region for an immersive, three-day work experience programme.

Colourful sea creatures called flame shells are found to have recovered from damage to their Wester Ross habitat….

A survey of Loch Carron in Wester Ross in 2017 suggested that nests of these molluscs had been broken up and flattened, after tracks for dredging was found in the area. However researchers from Edinburgh’s Heriot Watt University has now discovered that after the Marine Protection Area was put in place, significant signs of recovery have been found. 

Applecross Community Toilets are under threat on the popular North Coast 500, due to a lack of funding…

The future of the Community Toilets at Applecross, which have previously been open all year round, is now in doubt, as the local Community Company is struggling to raise the necessary funds to keep them open. Previously a grant was awarded by Highland Council to keep them open, especially during the Autumn and winter months, but this has not been successful this year. The Committee has said that current donations are not enough to sustain its operation.
