As previously reported, crofters will benefit from simplified processes and less bureaucracy following the passing of the Crofting and Scottish Land Court Bill which also streamlines the Crofting Commission’s duties and gives it new powers to protect croft land.
An additional provision of the new Act is the amalgamation of the Scottish Land Court and the Lands Tribunal for Scotland to create one body to be known as the Scottish Land Court which will include a statutory requirement to have a Gaelic speaking member. According to Agriculture Minister, Jim Fairlie, the expanded Scottish Land Court will provide crofters and rural communities with a simpler and more coherent system for resolving disputes.
Further legislation has been passed by the Scottish Parliament which will allow local authorities to set the proposed visitor levy as a single fixed amount or multiple fixed amounts, such as for different times of year with Councils able to choose between the new option or the existing percentage rate model.
A collection of ten vintage wedding dresses forms the basis of a new creative partnership between Highland Hospice Retail and UHI North West and Hebrides. Titled Woven Memories: Stories in Stitch, the project saw students transform donated gowns into new works of art, breathing fresh life into pieces that might otherwise have been forgotten.
The dresses, donated to Highland Hospice, span decades of changing fashion from post-war elegance to 1980s grandeur and contemporary minimalism. Students researched the social and cultural context of each garment, exploring how attitudes towards marriage, gender roles, economy and celebration have evolved over time.
