A yellow weather warning for wind has been issued covering the northern part of the UK including the whole of Scotland from 6am on Monday until 6am on Tuesday.

The strongest winds are most likely across Scotland with gusts of up to 85mph possible on exposed coasts and hills with heavy rain expected and transport disruption anticipated.

The storm has been named Storm Floris and according to the Met Office, it will bring a spell of unusually windy weather for the time of year. The strongest winds are likely during Monday afternoon and night, easing first in the west later on Monday.

Leverburgh lifeboat station on Harris was reopened on a trial basis in 2021 following a period of closure but its management group has decided to withdraw from the trial at the end of the summer season due to a lack of crew members, putting the future of the station in doubt.

The number of crew members and support staff has almost halved making a 24/7 on call service difficult and at some times unobtainable. The RNLI has said it will consult with other search and rescue partners before a final decision is made on the future of the site. The Leverburgh lifeboat which has operated from the station since 2021 has been called out on 23 occasions.

A Japanese travel company Japan Rail Pass has described the Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh railway line as the fourth most scenic in the World after the Bernina Express in the Swiss Alps, the Flam Railway in Norway and the Glacier Express in Switzerland.

Completed in 1897, the line was the most expensive rail project of its day: the last 10 miles between Stromeferry and Kyle needed 31 cuttings and 29 tunnels and had to be blasted out of solid rock. Visit Scotland says the result is a gem of a railway passing over deserted beaches and through fishing villages and offering views of mountains and herons and possibly the odd eagle or otter.

The SPFL league fixtures for the season begin this weekend.

Ross County starts its time in the Championship with an away match against Airdrieonians while in League One, Inverness Caley Thistle is also away from home against Kelty Hearts.

Following its administration last season, Caley Thistle starts the season at the foot of the league on minus five points and will be trying to make up that deficit as quickly as possible. Both matches kick off at three o’clock this afternoon.
